the Alcazar

Oh, the Alcazar. This fantastic riot of architecture resulted when a series of Catholic monarchs took over an existing Moorish structure and commissioned Moorish artisans (who I believe were still around because this was after the Catholics conquered Sevilla but before the Inquisition) to build, add, dcoate, remodel, and whatnot in the Moorish style - except where there are Castile y Leon (castle and lion) coats of armor and motifs, not to ention the occasional Romanesque mural depicting people and other clearly un-Moorish touches. Anyway, this architectural yard sale seems to have limited historical value, except for providing a handsome spot to debrief Columbus, but it is fascinating just for its ornate and disparate decorations, and it has the most gorgeous gardens in Sevilla - which is impressive, given Sevilla's array of beautiful gardens.
This particular photo shows one of the many ceilings that I found mesmerizing for their wonderful use of geometric repetition and color, and it's pretty similar to others I saw in the Alhambra, a genuinely Moorish site.
